Centre for Effective Discipline A US-based non-profit organization which provides educational information to the public on the effects of corporal punishment of children and alternatives to its use.

Child Welfare League of Canada Dedicated to the protection and well-being of vulnerable children, youth and their families.

Coalition on Physical Punishment of Children and Youth A coalition of Canadian organizations supporting the Joint Statement on Physical Punishment of Children and Youth.

Global Initiative to End All Corporal Punishment of Children This organization provides information on the global progress towards ending corporal punishment.

Community Resources in Ontario

211Ontario  A helpline and website providing information about community, social, health promotion and related government services. Dial 211.

Children’s Aid  Offers general information on Children’s Aid Societies and information on reporting abuse.

Ontario Government Services for Children  The website of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services.

Public Health Units of Ontario  This web page provides a link to all public health units of Ontario.

Programs for Parents

Availability of these programs differs across Ontario.

EarlyON Child and Family Centres  Places where parents and caregivers can take part with their children in a range of programs and activities.

Nobody’s Perfect  A parenting education and support program for parents of children from birth to age five. It is designed to meet the needs of parents who are young, single, socially or geographically isolated or who have low income or limited formal education.

Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting   A parent support program that helps parents gradually move away from physical and emotional punishment and toward solutions that nurture their children’s healthy development and learning.

The IncredibleYears  A series of evidence-based programs for parents, children, and teachers. The goal is to prevent and treat young children’s behavior problems and promote their social, emotional, and academic competence.

Triple P Ontario  Programs that give parents simple and practical strategies to help them confidently manage their children’s behaviour, prevent problems developing and build strong, healthy relationships.

Corporal Punishment  A research-based article from the Encyclopedia on Early Childhood Development on the prevalence and outcomes of corporal punishment in the international context.

Eyes on Discipline – How Much is Enough?  A pamphlet from the Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Development. Offers general information on effective discipline techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions about Time-outs. A resource for service providers that answers some questions about time-outs and suggests appropriate ways to guide children’s behaviour.

Healthy Baby – Healthy Brain  A website to help parents support the brain development of their child from pregnancy to age 3.

Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting  A book by Save the Children and Dr. Joan Durrant explaining what positive discipline is and how to apply it with children 0-18.

Positive Discipline is in Your Hands  A resource for parents and caregivers of infant to teens. Developed by the Positive Discipline Coalition of Durham Region.
